At Spoken Flame Company™, we meet you where you're at—whether you're just starting out or carrying a story that’s been waiting for the right time. Explore our services below to see how we can support your journey.

Quill & Book.png

~Every project begins with a free consultation. A time to talk through your story, your goals, and the vision you believe God’s placed on your heart. This conversation helps us prayerfully consider whether the project is a good fit and ensures we move forward with mutual clarity and peace.

~We reserve the right to decline any project that does not align with our values or falls outside the scope of what we can carry out with excellence and spiritual integrity.

Manuscript Editing

Manuscript Editing

This isn't just editing—this is a journey of growth.

My unique coaching-style approach is designed to teach and build, strengthening both your writing and your voice. Each edit offers guidance and insight, giving you tools and confidence to apply what you've learned to what comes next.

With every step, you’ll grow in skill and confidence, learning to tell your story with greater clarity, purpose, and authenticity.

Combined Developmental + Line Edit (Coaching-Style)

Step One: Understanding Your Story (This comes first!)

Before diving into the editing process, I take time to understand your story as a whole: its heart, structure, and flow. This stage allows me to evaluate what your manuscript needs and helps you strengthen your writing before we begin the full edit.

You may choose one of the following:

  • Option 1: Full Beta Read (Recommended)

    • Includes margin notes and a detailed summary

    • Completion Credit: Receive 15% of your Beta Read fee as a credit off your final editing invoice

    • Rate: $1.50 per 1,000 words

  • Option 2: Synopsis + Outline + Sample Read-Through

If a full Beta Read isn’t the right fit, this option gives me the context I need to understand your story’s structure and flow before editing begins.

You’ll provide: (all items are required)

  • A one-page synopsis summarizing your full story

  • A chapter-by-chapter outline

  • Completed Manuscript

What I’ll do:

  • Read through select chapters to see your story’s beginning, progression, and resolution (up to 20,000 words)

  • Review your synopsis and outline to understand the big-picture flow

  • Provide light notes on structure, pacing, and overall impression

  • Rate: $3.50 per 1,000 words

Step Two: Pause for Revision

During this step, you’ll have time to review the feedback, make revisions, and strengthen your manuscript.
Once you're ready to move forward, we’ll begin Step Three—your personalized, coaching-style edit.

Step Three: The Editing Process

    1. Setup Fee

Before we begin, a small setup fee covers the behind-the-scenes work that gets your project ready: creating your client file, preparing contracts, processing checklists and forms, organizing your manuscript, and scheduling your start date. This one-time fee is non-refundable, as it covers the administrative time needed before your edit begins.

  • Under 60,000 words → $50

  • 60,000 words and above → $75

    2. Retainer / Completion Credit

To reserve your spot on my schedule, a small retainer is collected before editing starts:

  • Under 60,000 words → $150

  • 60,000 words and above → $250

—Think of this as a commitment deposit. It's a way to secure your place and show we’re both invested in seeing your project through. When your final invoice is due, that same amount is applied as a credit, reducing your last payment. *If the project is cancelled early or the contract is broken, the retainer becomes non-refundable and is not applied to any remaining balance.

    3. Editing and Coaching in Action

I edit your manuscript chapter-by-chapter or section-by-section (usually 2–3 chapters at a time).

  • You’ll receive your edited section with in-line comments, tracked changes, and a brief follow-up email highlighting key patterns, next steps, and focus areas.

  • Invoices are sent after each section, and payment is due within 7 days.

  • Billed per hour - you only pay for the actual work done (expected time frames included in your proposal)

This approach allows you to learn as you go. By applying what you learn from one section to the next, you’ll grow in both skill and confidence. Each stage builds on the last—strengthening your voice, refining your craft, and reducing the amount of editing needed over time.

    4. Completion Bonus

  • When your final chapter/section is complete, your retainer will be applied as a credit to that last invoice—your reward for following through to the finish line.

  • Qualifying Beta Reads discounts will also be added to your final editing invoice

A Few More Things

  • No Surprises: After the initial consultation, you’ll receive a custom quote based on your manuscript word count and read-through option. All fees are listed up front so you never have to worry.

  • Team Effort: Editing is a collaboration, not a takeover. You'll always be in control of your story, with edits offered as suggestions rather than demands.

  • Your Format, Your Way: I’ll return your edits in Word or Google Docs, using tracked changes and/or comments so you can review and decide what works for you.

Beta Reading

Alpha & Beta Reading

Thoughtful feedback from someone who sees both the words and the heart behind them.

At Spoken Flame, reading is more than a quick skim—it’s a prayerful, story-minded read-through of your manuscript with honest, constructive feedback designed to help you strengthen your work before it reaches editors or readers.

Whether you're wondering if your story flows, if your message comes through, or if it resonates the way you hoped, this service offers feedback from the lens of your intended audience with your values and goals in mind.

"Never before have I received such thorough, well-explained feedback from any of the ten or twelve beta readers who have read my two manuscripts. Every comment from Spoken Flame Company was spot-on. Most importantly, the feedback was actionable. I could clearly see how each suggestion would strengthen my story."

Julia Casselman

juliacasselman.com

These services are not editing—they are guided reflections from a reader’s perspective. I won’t fix your grammar or rewrite your sentences. Instead, I offer thoughtful, faith-aware feedback to help you understand how your story comes across: what connects, what confuses, and where the Spirit may be inviting deeper clarity. This is about perspective, not perfection. It's a mirror held up to your words so you can see more clearly what they’re becoming.

Alpha Read

First Impressions for Rough Drafts

Sometimes you just need a fresh set of eyes to help you see the heart of your story more clearly. The Alpha Read is for early-stage manuscripts that haven’t been fully edited yet. You’ll receive honest, high-level impressions of:

  • Overall clarity and flow

  • Emotional and spiritual resonance

  • Major areas of confusion or disconnect

*This service is ideal for rough or in-progress drafts and is delivered as a short, 2-3 page summary offering overall impressions and guidance.

*Because unedited drafts often require more time and care to assess, the Alpha Read is priced slightly higher than a standard beta read to reflect the extra effort involved.

Beta Read

Reader Reactions with Insight

This deeper read is designed for manuscripts that are closer to completion. I offer honest, story-minded feedback to help you strengthen your work before it reaches editors or readers. You'll receive:

  • Notes on pacing, characters, and structure

  • Insights into theme, voice, and emotional impact

  • Encouragement where it's working and gentle honesty where it’s not

*This service is best suited for revised or nearly finished manuscripts and is delivered as a thoughtful feedback letter (typically 4-6 pages) focused on how the story reads from the perspective of a target reader.

*You will receive input on story flow, character development, clarity, and emotional impact—not sentence-level editing or line-by-line critique.

Pricing

Alpha Read:

  • $2.00 per 1,000 words (typed)

  • $35/hour (handwritten)

  • Projects under 10,000 words are billed at a flat minimum of $20 to cover reading time and written feedback.

Beta Read:

  • $1.50 per 1,000 words (typed)

  • $25/hour (handwritten)

  • Projects under 10,000 words are billed at a flat rate of $15 to cover reading time and written feedback.

Self-Publishing Assistance

Self-Publishing Assistance

You don’t have to figure it out alone.

Self-publishing can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to navigate it by yourself. Spoken Flame offers step-by-step guidance through the Amazon KDP process, helping you turn your finished manuscript into a published book.

Whether you’ve got a fully formatted file or are still figuring out what trim size even means, we’ll walk through it together with clarity and prayerful support.

This service is ideal for writers who want to retain control over their work but need a steady hand to walk with them through the technical side of publishing.

KDP Publishing Setup

Rate: $25/hour

I make the KDP process simple by guiding you through every stage—setting up your author account, selecting the right trim size, entering your title and keywords, choosing categories, setting pricing, and getting your book ready to launch.

E-Book Formatting

Rate: $25/hour

I handle the Kindle formatting process for you—ensuring your manuscript meets Amazon’s e-book standards with a polished interior layout, basic front and back matter, and a clickable table of contents when applicable.

ISBN Consultation

Price: $10 flat fee

Only charged if you're buying your own ISBN and need help registering or assigning it (typically through Bowker). This includes a short one-on-one session explaining how ISBNs work, how to connect them to your book, and when it makes sense to use your own vs. Amazon’s free option.

→ No charge if you’re using KDP’s free ISBN or already have one purchased and ready.

Prayer & Pep Talk

Sometimes the hardest part is clicking “publish.” Whether you're nervous, uncertain, or just need a minute to breathe, we’re here for that too.

This one’s always free.

Manuscript Formatting

Bring your story back to life—clearly, cleanly, and ready for the next step.

Spoken Flame Company offers two restoration paths: one for already typed or digital manuscripts that need cleanup and formatting, and one for handwritten works that need to be typed and prepared for editing.

Whether your words are tucked away in a file or written by hand on paper, we’ll help you shape them into a digital, organized, and edit-ready format without altering your voice or message.

This service is perfect for those who don’t need full editing yet— just a solid, professional restoration of their work so it’s ready to move forward.
